This season, Wakaba Higuchi’s short program dress has been one of my favorite costumes. Designed by Satomi Ito, Wakaba’s bold dress has a perfect color combination. This ombre dress has some touches of orange, pink, purple, white, blue, and black, yet the combination is impeccably balanced. The mesh in the neck line matches Wakaba’s skin color perfectly, which is a subtle detail that can make or break a figure skater’s whole outfit. The black and white beaded lines, along with the blue, pink, and purple rhinestones give a touch of brightness to the dress complementing the costume. The skirt has a beautiful movement while Higuchi glides through the ice. Overall, the outfit is fun without losing elegance, and it fits the program’s upbeat tempo wonderfully.

During the first half of this season, in her 2018 Skate Canada Autumn Classic short program, Evgenia Medvedeva showed us a costume so different from what we are used to from her. A black top with a lightly ombre navy blue dress, and rhinestone details in pink, silver, and blue flattered Medvedeva and her program. Definitely inspired in the flapper dresses form the 1920′s, Evgenia’s dress suited her music perfectly. I specially loved the fringed skirt, which added to the fun element of the program’s music and her personalized rose-gold blades, which is a detail that I enjoy skaters to change.  Sadly, Evgenia changed both her short and free programs along with its dresses, so we probably won’t be seeing this costume during the rest of the 2018-19 season.
