Winter Olympics Taster Sessions

Our new on-ice tasters will give you the opportunity to try a variety of ice sports in one session, including ice hockey, speed skating and figure skating!

The tasters are free when you purchase a standard ice skating ticket – you can then enjoy skating on the public session either before or after the tasters.

You’ll get to try 7 minutes on each of the three skating disciplines, lead by a coach as part of a larger circuit.

Our coaches and skaters will be performing an exhibition at the start of the taster session to show what you can do, and will be on hand to provide guidance and support throughout the session.

Dates: Tuesday 20th February and Thursday 22 February

Times:  13.15, 13:40 or 14.05

Location: Arena ice rink (home to the Nottingham Panthers and the GB Short Track Team!)

There will be more activities set up in our foyer, including a shooting cage, SkillzBox and a colouring station for little ones!

Part of the session will be in the Tots Zone where you will get a demo of the basics of Speed skating. You will then be able to try out your new Speed skills around the rink with support from the coach.

Session times:
Saturdays – 12:30-13:00
Sundays – 14:00-14:30

Beat the queues and pre-book public skating sessions online at the National Ice Centre!

The National Ice Centre (NIC) has undergone a review and rebrand, launching several new initiatives to help attract new skaters!

The changes include a Warm Up Zone to give first time customers skating tips and advice, a dedicated area in the centre of the ice for pre-schoolers, schedule changes to give customers the chance to skate for longer with extended skating sessions, and a simplified pricing structure where skate hire is included in all ticket prices and children under the age of five skate for free.

There will no public skating sessions on Monday evenings. Public skating sessions over the weekend will be extended, and we’re introducing a new Friday afternoon skating session (5:30pm-7pm).

The changes follow the results of a market research project carried out earlier this year to understand the potential barriers to ice skating.

Stephen Chaston, Operations Manager at the NIC said: “The market research helped us to establish that we needed to create more of a positive ‘first time’ ice skating experience and enhance the general venue experience overall. Over the past few months we’ve worked hard on a number of ideas to make this happen. We’ve introduced new, comfortable ice skates, reviewed the skating schedule maximizing skating sessions at the times when people prefer to attend, made ice equipment more affordable, introduced a children’s menu in Sub Zero, and we’ve retrained our ice rink staff to ensure customers receive a quality service.”

We apologise for any inconvenience caused to customers who might regularly attend skating sessions. However, the changes will enable us to continue to bring you world-class leisure facilities and allow new people to access and enjoy ice skating.
